Group Cruise Discounts, Explained Honestly

Group cruise discounts come in more than one form, and the biggest saving is not always the one with “group” in its name. Understanding the pieces helps your group judge an offer.

The group fare

A rate for the block, usually held for the group until a set date. Its value is predictability: everyone knows what they will pay, and space is protected.

Amenity points or perks

Points or credits that the group spends on extras. Princess, for instance, publishes that its points vary by voyage and by how far ahead the group is booked.

Tour conductor credits

A berth credit for a number of paid cabins; Princess’s Celebration Group terms set one credit for every eight staterooms booked.

Flexible deposits

Group deposits are often lower or due later than individual ones; Princess requires its bulk deposit 30 days after confirmation.

Public promotions

Sales open to everyone may beat the group fare for some cabins. Wave Season shows current offers.

Personal discounts

Past-guest, military, senior and resident rates can apply to individual members. Cruising for Less explains them.

Group Fare or Public Sale?

The best group deal is the one every member understands.

Fares change daily, and a public sale can briefly drop below a group rate. A good advisor watches both and moves cabins to whichever is better, as long as it does not cost the group its perks. Ask these questions before you commit:

  • Which fare type is the group rate based on, and what does it include?
  • How many cabins must sail to keep the perks and credits?
  • What happens to perks if members switch to a public promotion?
  • When do names, deposits and final payments fall due?

Using Perks Fairly

Remember too that perks have conditions. Many depend on a minimum number of cabins actually sailing, so if the group shrinks after deposits, some extras may be reduced. Keep members informed as numbers change.

The easiest way to keep a group happy is to agree on perks in writing before anyone pays. Decide whether credits reduce the organizer’s fare as thanks for the work, are split among all cabins, or pay for a group event. Tell members which of those you chose. Group Discount Questions

What is a tour conductor credit?

A credit some lines award a group for every set number of paid cabins or guests. It is typically worth one berth at the group fare, and taxes and fees usually still apply. Groups decide in advance whether it reduces the organizer’s cost or is shared among everyone.

Can group discounts be combined with other offers?

Sometimes. Past-guest, military, senior or resident rates may or may not combine with a group fare depending on the line. Ask your advisor to price both ways.
